"Maria Terranova, microbiologist and professor of genetics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was found dead Tuesday morning on the beach outside of her Sandwich, Cape Cod, home, the victim of an apparent canine attack. She was 63 and made her home in Cambridge and in Sandwich. |

"A 1947 graduate of Radcliffe College, Ms. Terranova received her doctorate in biology from Oxford University as a Rhodes scholar and joined the MIT faculty in 1975. A specialist in genetics, Dr. Terranova was the author of numerous scientific articles and three books. Before joining the MIT faculty she conducted research in microbiology for the US Army and for private laboratories. |
